From the point of view of communication theory, video games belong to the category of “cool media,” which can have a particularly profound effect on the worldview of players, especially young people. Compared with other mass culture products and mass media, video games have a number of features that make them more influential on the values, preferences and social identity of their users. One of the main points of intersection between world politics and video games is the latter’s potential to be used as an instrument of soft power. As part of the shift towards the study of popular culture and media, the science of international relations has been increasingly focusing on video games.
